The Privacy Guarantor has opened an investigation into Kaspersky

The Privacy Guarantor has opened an investigation into the Russian company that provides Kaspersky antivirus software. This is to evaluate the potential risks related to the processing of personal data of Italian customers.

The initiative was necessary due to the recent events in Ukraine with the aim of deepening the alarms raised by numerous Italian and European entities specializing in computer security.

The risks posed are those of a possible use of the antivirus for computer attacks against Italian companies and public administrations.

Kaspersky Lab will have to provide the Privacy Guarantor with the number, data of Italian customers and detailed information on the processing of data for the different security products and services it provides. In addition to this, it will have to provide detailed information on requests for acquisition or communication of personal data from third countries from January 1st, 2021. This will be done for each country and it must indicate if the requests have been approved. Finally, it must also clarify whether the data processed has been transferred outside the European Union during the same period.
